"ever after“
“auf ewig”, 2001
sound & space installation, Schloss Horst Gelsenkirchen
in cooperation with Galerie Kabuth and the city council of Gelsenkirchen
The Renaissance castle is a venue for cultural events and home of the biggest register office in Gelsenkirchen.
For eight weeks before the „ever after“ installation was realized, daily newspapers published advertisements and asked couples who got married there to make their wedding dresses and suits available for the installation.
47 couples were ready to do this.
The suits and dresses were hung about 12 metres high from the ceiling in the same way miners hang their clothes in change houses.
During the eight weeks the register office and couples getting married there also agreed to have their original „I do“ recorded.
These were copied into an infinite loop which was then played back continuously, the 12 speakers attached to the castle’s facade making the promises sound like a soft echo.
